Hi. I'm a similar spot. I just posted almost the same question. We are sending home a flyer w the kids today. I made it here at home and e-mail it to our principal. I also noticed (some where) on this site a 2 hour pledge printable that thought was kinda neat. I'm going to talk to the other 2 or 3 PTO moms and our principal about handing that out at our Open House next week. Also, I'm working on a board to help promote our PTCO that we'll display at the open house. After I'm done here, I'm going to see if I can find any those "studies" that prove how parent involement helps your kids. If I can find it, I'm going to some how use it on my back-board.
Thats as far as we've gotten. I'm still looking for more tips and ideas too. If I find anything else that seems like it may be of some help I'll pass it along to you.
Keep trying-- and don't get discouraged-- Try to plan a fun night to get families to the school and let parents know that these types can't happen without help from them...
I hear you. I just came home from our 1st meeting of the year what a dissappointment. I'm the "acting" President (signed on to be the VP and the President dropped out, the secertary moved and the Treasurer's term will end at the same time as me) The people in attendance were the principal, school secertary, janitor(who is also a parent) a teacher and two old members and one "new" parent. Are school is small as well. Pre-K thru 5th and only 124 students. I asked for nominations for VP and seceratary and you would have thought I asked them to commit a crime. What is a crime is that parents think they are too busy to volunteer. I believe we have to seek out those parents that feel the same as us: if it is important enough then you MAKE the time.
I've been reading all the tips I can and I am willing to try them all. I refuse to give up. There have to be others like us. Don't there? Where are they?
I need some ideas and help rebuilding a very run down PTO. This is only my second year being involved with PTO as my daughter is only in 1st grade. Last year we went through two different presidents and ended the school year with no president, no secretary, no treasurer and only me as the VP. Our meetings usually consisted on a few teachers, the parents that worked at the school, me, and occasionly another parent who doesn't work at the school. I really don't know where to begin to rebuild this PTO and get parents involved. Any help greatly appreciated and needed. Thanks (PS this is a very small elementary school of K-6 grades and about 180 to 200 kids total)
