Your ByLaws should have Term Limits. Also, have a person running or co-running events. Then ppl can help without dealing with overbearing President. Type up a letter and get page two signed by people. Submit to Principal. The names would be kept confidential and then you see the real impact that is happening.

I think that you might be able to broach this issue at an executive board meeting without pinning the issue to the president's personality. One approach might be "Hey - for some reason this year we're losing volunteers...let's discuss some of the things that are going on that have caused that to happen"....maybe it isn't all the president's fault. Perhaps you can discuss the general air of the organization changing to be more inviting to folks and come up with a way to facilitate that. Do you have a volunteer thank you luncheon or tea perhaps. Something that might be a light inviting event (getting the children of the volunteers together to sing a song to their parents will always pack them in)....anyway--if the change is this dramatic then you as a board need to do something or the group will continue to suffer which means the children will not be served as well as they can be.

good luck

What about yourself-- you have been VP for 2 years-- that's great training to move up to teh next position. You know what it takes to bring volunteers in and keep them and you've already found out what drives them away-- so you are off to a great start already--- the other thing you could try is offer to co-chair the position with her as well.
I am not an advocate of this-- since year to year there could be a new person in either position- and if you are co-chairing you must be able to get along quite well together. But it is an option... either way, you might hurt the President's feelings-- talk with her generally and see if she plans on running again.

This is my second year as PTO Vice President. The first year that I was VP, we had a fairly large attendance at our meetings and a large group of parents who regularly volunteered. We had a different president then. She was very outgoing and friendly to everyone and people loved her.

This year things are quite different. The first meeting was quite well attended, but there have been hardly any people at subsequent meetings. We have very few people who volunteer to help with events and fundraisers. As the year has progressed, the numbers have steadily declined.

At a recent event, I spoke with several parents who used to volunteer often. Many of them said that they felt the new president was snobby and overbearing. Some also suggested that her attitude is scaring off new volunteers.

Of course, the decrease in volunteers has increased the workload for the board members, especially the president. I know that she is worn down by all of the work she has had to do. If we could get the volunteers back there would be much less work for everyone and we would have a strong base like we used to have.

I'm not sure exactly how to approach this with her, or if I even should. There does not appear to be anyone else who is planning to run for the PTO President position in our upcoming elections, so she will most likely be the president again next year.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
