Tim,

This year we are starting a similiar program for our hispanic families. Our school is in central Florida where we have many parents who don't speak a word of English. We are having a meeting at the beginning of the year to inform these families of the school's rules and regulations. Then we want to pair them with experienced parents who are bilingual. These "mentors" will be there to guide them during the year. Part of their responsibilities will be to personally call and remind those they are paired with about school activities and will sit and translate for them at these activities.

We are at the beginning of the planning stages so I would also like to know if anyone else has a similiar program in place and any good advice.

A refusal is not the act of a friend. Would you like to join our Family?"

Well in the military everyone coming into a new post is assigned a "sponsor" that does basically what you're talking about so you could use that...we use "Kindercats" at our school for our K-s so you could use

Eaglette Sponsors
Eagle's Nest Sponsor

how about using "boosters" in there. We had Bobcat Boosters rally up for our Standardized Test Prep.

Or the school "Rally Team". Of course the Welcome Wagon is always there or the "Sunshine Committee".

If you think you'd like to play off Eagles let me know. I can usually get some milage off of that sort of thing.

Eagle -- but it's not used too much.

Hey All -

Looking for the perfect name... any ideas or inspiration?

So our group is starting a new tradition where we provide each new incoming family with a designated "experienced/old pro" family as a point of contact.

Idea is that the old pro family will call or email the new family before school starts, welcome new family to school, and then give email and phone number to new family in case they have any questions through the year on any of the little or big things that can confound and/or frustrate a new family.

Anyone try anything like this at their group? Any tips or warnings or best practices?

More importantly -- any great name for the program or for the old pro families?

Leery of "mentors" (cuz it sounds too officious/parental) and leery if "buddies" or "big brothers" (cuz they seem too cutesy). Anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Tim
