Ok I talked to the principal. Claims that everything is ok, the laws by all are being followed. Legally he can't ask her to leave, but since very few people knew about before, now it is a HUGE headache for hime so I can only hope for the schools credibility and safety to ALL students he asks her to step down, and volunteer maybe it not such a public role. I do know people have contacted local news because they are scared, as I am to with kids in the school. It is sad that this woman wants to put herself through this, this was me,(which it wouldn't be)I would never take on the public role, I would stay behind "closed doors" and to not be so public so this isn't always brought up.

I don't think that "mason" has a PTO role. She signed concerned mom. Another thought is to go to the PTO VP and ask her for the story. If she is willing to take on such a public position, she has to know that information is going to come out. Get the details and facts, don't rely on word of mouth.

Talk to the principal and find out what kind measures of security are being taken. If the man has been at the school, find out why and how it happened and what will keep it from happening again.

Like so many others have said, it's not the VP's crime or the children's. They have done nothing wrong. You have every right to be concerned and demand answers, but try not to punish the innocent in the process.

I also believe that access to the building and school events is a school/district issue.

You have every right to be concerned, but I'd encourage you to take this professionally to the school principal. If you don't receive the response you think appropriate, you can certainly go professionally to the district admin, etc. But I'd do that in your role as a concerned parent, not in your PTO role.

Just because he may not be on familywatchdog list doenst mean he is NOT a sex offender. Not all data bases are complete, and famwatchdog is a volunteer org. and not all states are required to report to the public anyway.
Also, not all offenders register. (not legal, but then, neither was their original crime)

This is a school district issue not a pto issue, you can not stop her from volunteering, it is her right. I am sure that your school is already aware that he is a registered offended but I would met with the principal to make sure they do know for a fact. This needs to be addressed by them, do not make this a personal war...they will be able to get all the facts. The fact that he has been on school grounds tells me there may be more to the story. Seems like staff at the school would have intervene...

You're right WFS that it's common to see PTO parents taking pictures and videos at events. If it's an event she's part of, it makes sense. I agree with you that she should be welcome to the suggestion that she not be the one taking pictures. I think she should be sensitive to the perception other parents might have and leave the picture taking to someone else.

The one and only time I took pictures at the school was the week after swingsets that the PTO purchased and installed were being used. I wanted to make a huge "THANK YOU!!!" bulletin board at school. So, I went to the principal first and asked if it would be ok for me to head out to morning recess and snap a few shots. He said, "Sure but then come back in and let me see what you get because a few of our kids have signed forms from the parents disallowing images of their child(ren) to be used in any way."

That way, if someone marched into the principal's office and said, "Hey, some lady is out on the playground taking pictures of kids. What's going on?!?!" he'd have an answer. And, for the record, I wouldn't be offended...
