Big Challenge

I recomend getting a group of serious parents who want to be involved and talk to the superintendent, boe and find out the real reason behind this decision. There will always be parents who dont want to be involed no matter what but for the parents that do it will make a huge difference with the student, school, teachers, etc.
There are many safety percautions the school can take so parents aren't just showing up and roaming the halls. We have a sign in sheet and they get a school pass. The volunteers also take a volunteer class that is required at the beginning of the school year. Our parents are always encouraged to help out room parents, reading room, pto, art room, science etc.

I think a Carnival would be great but your going to have to work especially hard getting the word out. But even with a few volunteers it would be worth the effort.

HUge Hugs and good luck

Are other schools in your area allow parents at the school? If so I would go to the Board of Education and find out why parents are not allowed to participate in your school. That would really concern me if I was not allowed to participate in my sons school. It is only hurting the kids. I am sure that the kids are wondering why their parents are not allowed to come to there classroom. Maybe you could try to set up something where the parents, prinicple, teachers and admins. all can get to together and work something out so that the parents can be involved with what is going on at the school.
I am the Secretary of our PTO and we had a fall festival. I turned out to be a great success but there was alot of time and work involved and getting parents to volunteer was the biggest thing. I hope you are able to come up with something to get the parents more involved in the school for the kids.

we had the same issue at our school last year. We wanted to bring back the fall festival & parade. The principal did not want it. Because it was afterschool, we told the principal we were going to still have it. It was a great success and we will persist and do it again next year

This is almost the same situation we have at our school. Parents aren't involved, teacher involvement is little to none. It places a tremendous burden on the principal, assistant principal and PTO to do the work of after school activities, etc.

Our task this year has been to work on things. Even though many of parents can not or will not volunteer, we have chosen to increase communication. We place signs in the car rider area for parents to see in the a.m. and p.m., post notices on the large school sign out front, send home announcements, use the phone call and e-mail system to leave messages for parents. We try not to overwhelm our parents, but sending notes via students just doesn't work as well. Our parents are beginning, just beginning to respond.

The problem can sometimes be that you hear lots of complaining, but people tend to like to complain rather than solve the issue. Next time you hear a complaint, Shortie, maybe ask "What would you suggest to solve the problem?" Then listen to the response and ask, "When will you do that?" It puts the ball in their court.

In dealing with the staff issue, we simply communicated (again, that word), to our principal that as a PTO board, we were not happy or feeling appreciated. We were in turn, thinking of not participating in a Teacher Appreciation Week, as we usually do and that we were talking to other parents about their opinions on teacher involvement. That got the ball rolling. Our principal communicated that to teachers, and we seemed to have started a revolution!

There's probably a protective reasoning behind their policies. Might be a bit over the edge, but we are not to reason why.......

OK Why..... Why not ??

No policy should be unexplained or 'well that's just the way it is... boy would they mehateme if I was there.

Shortie --

Private school or public school?

There are some subtle differences depending on your answer, but -- either way -- sounds like there are a lot of people around your school/admin/district who need educatin' on the value and power of great parent involvement.

What's happening at your school is bad for kids. Simple as that.
