I am the parent volunter coordinator for our group. I feel like I help although sometimes I feel like i am spinning my wheels. this year I put together a room parent handbook with any info I could possibly think of that they may need (list of students, calendar, school policies about volunteers, etc). I held a meeting to go over everything, answer questions, and show them where the copier was (and how to work it), die cuts, adult bathrooms, drink machines, etc. i work closely with the teachers on how their room parents are doing, if they need anything, and if i can help with anything. I have 2 classes with no official room parents but parents who want to do things, just not organize it. For those classes, i come up with a plan, send out osme notes, and they take over from there. I try to work really closely with the kindergarten and first grade parents, to get them involved and make them feel comfortable. I arrange volunteers for PTO functions (carnival, teacher luncheons, etc). in my school, this position is elected to PTO. i also try to keep in touch with my room parents to see how I can help them and if things are going ok with their teachers. We have some teachers that will suck you dry if they think they can.
Overall I have had a lot of fun with it. I enjoy getting to know the parents and working towards involving them in some way. i had a blast at grandparents day getting grandparents to volunteer for things. i think it takes an outgoing personality for this position and I certainly am not a shy person.
Hope this helped.
