Our school is getting ready for a "safety night". We plan on inviting the fire dept, police dept (for gangs, bike safety, general safety like walking home, kids at home alone). We are also going to touch on internet issues: safety/bullying with our school counsler. My ideal will be to have everyone in our AP room with tables around the room and all their info/people there. That way parents will be able to pick and choose what is important to them.

Be sure and do a search on the older forum postings. There was some really good discussion about this a couple years ago. It can be as broad or as narrow as you like, possibly including:

internet safety
first aid
home safety
water safety
stranger danger
fire safety
bicycle safety

We've never done one, but I remember the previous discussions having some wonderful ideas.

Noticed that they have videos for sale on getting to school safely, keeping kids safe (available Dec 2006), and the Stranger Safety that is by Julie Clark, Founder of Baby Einstein and John Walsh. this says it is for 5-11 years old and only $29.95.

They also have lots of posters dealing with bullying, character, etc.

I emailed the principal today and suggested the PTO purchase the Stranger Safety since we have a half way house that will house registered sex offenders coming out of prision being built a couple of blocks from our school. Lots of parents are concerned and I think this might be a good idea to get this movie and show the kids.

What an excellent idea! We've never done a safety fair but we've incorporated safety ideas into a Health & Wellness Fair and Field Days that we had in the past. Bike riding safety courses, the fire department comes to school to talk about safety. Just a few weeks ago there was a 100 mile bike ride (with about 80 riders) that visited several schools in our county and were riding to get the word out on safety for the Missing and Exploited Children's center.

Something you could also check into...our county sheriff has a motor home/bus thing they drive to fairs and public events where they fingerprint and make I.D. cards with all your child's info on it. They learn some safety tips, parents get to keep the cards and the police already have your child's info on file to share with other agencies a.s.a.p. should (God forbid) anything happen.

Does anyone out there do a Safety Fair at your school? Something like fingerprinting, car seat checks, etc. Something for the community,
