I have a new high school student this year and she attends a K-12 school with her brothers "down the hall" so I will be in the building but this is where I think my role will change.
I have noticed many parents take on such a different role in high school attending feild trips to colleges, being apart career day, Proms, Homecoming, really just making sure teachers know of their special talents and desire to be apart without being apart....it makes sense.
This could all be done with forming a formal PTO too. Now that you talked with the Principal, I would talk with the Dept. Head for your child's dept to talk about volunteering.
My son's high school is brand new. We had a lady who was going to serve as ptso president, but pulled out at the last minute. I have volunteered to help keep the ball rolling in any way possible, but made it clear to the principal I work full time, plus have an hour commute to get home..so my ability to commit to a full time type of volunteerism was probably limited. We hadn't yet started having meetings, nor did we even have a full board..there were four of us, now three. We have a mission statement, and know what the first couple of priorities are as far as fundraising...and that is it.
School started this past Monday. I have a meeting with the principal today to help see about keeping the ball rolling...and have absolutely no idea where to start.
Any help or ideas would be so welcomed....I wouldn't even know what questions to ask!
