Our community is becoming "old" - how do schools reach out to retirees?

You could invite them in as a Reading with the Community week. Or I am sure that some of them have some stories they could share about life experiences as part of a Looking at the Past day, or invite them to have lunch as part of a Grandparent/special adult friend luncheon. They could volunteer in the nurses office making calls to kids homes who didn't come in that day, in the library checking in books, things like that.

You could hold a bingo and give a discount for senior citizens...whilst you have them- you could present them with some support options. We have a seniors apartment complex opening near us soon and I'm hoping to get their help with volunteering etc by doing something similar. We'll see...d

We have Grandmas that help out in the classrooms. You can ask them to maybe read to classes once or twice a week. Good luck!

With the first wave of "baby boomers" poised to retire in 2010, my community is slowly turning into a bed of retirees.

I would love to see some ideas on how PTOs and booster clubs could reach out to this mass of talent. (of which I've found to be pretty finicky).

Those that I have approached quickly back away, reach for their golf clubs and say "I did my time in the PTO years ago."

Just because their kids are grown, possibly they can find some fulfilling volunteerism at our school.

Again, this demographic of our population is growing by leaps and bounds. How can we tap into this market to get some involvement?
