We are a group of researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) conducting a study about parent-child interactions during homework time.
Years of research documents the critical role of parents’ attitudes and behaviors in children’s, especially girls’, persistence and achievement in math and science. Yet, very few parent involvement organizations are aware of this issue.
Our recent study found that girls (but not boys) were sensitive to parental intrusions with math homework. This work came out recently in the Journal of Sex Roles and was picked up by news releases on our University website: (

Building on these crucial findings about the link between parents’ behaviors and girls’ math confidence, the current study expands this work to see what happens when girls have a sibling who is good at math.
We invite you all to participate in the following study. We will also really appreciate if you could inform members in your PTO about this study .

We are recruiting families with at least two children (one needs to be a sixth- or seventh- grade girl) to participate in a research study about parent-child interactions involving math and English homework.
