Each year NASA and Lockheed Martin Corporation host an event called Space Day (see
www.spaceday.org) -- a free program designed to encourage students' interest in math and science through space studies. Many schools across the world celebrate this event. One of the elements of this program is called Student Signatures in Space. The way it works is that NASA sends participating schools a giant poster (along with a few minor Space Day souvenirs), and on Space Day the schools have their students sign the posters. The schools return the posters to NASA (Lockheed Martin pays for shipping costs so this program doesn't cost schools a penny), the signatures are scanned onto a disc, and the disc is flown in space aboard a Space Shuttle mission. Schools are sent follow-up lesson plans to help them make the experience relevent for the students. Students get certificates verifying their signatures will be flying in space. After the Space Shuttle mission, NASA returns the posters to the schools for permanent display, along with a certification verifying that the signatures flew in space. The program is totally free, it's easy to do, and the "personal touch" of sending their signatures to space gives kids a reason to learn about space. For more info, you can visit the Space Day web site at
www.spaceday.org, then click on the "Teachers/Event Planners" link on the home page, then click on the "Student Signatures in Space" link (ninth link down in the column on the left). Space is limited to only 500 schools per year. This year's registration deadline is Monday, March 20, 2006.
