Our dad's aren't involved in every PTO meeting. All we have to do is them to do something and they do it.Our dad's maintain the playground, attend the field trips, come for primary lunch day, help with field day, participate and help organize/set up the silent auction and golf tournament. They won't volunteer but if you ask them to do something specific then they agree to do.
It's supposed to be a program for Dads to get them in the schools and involved with their children-traditionally considered the mother's role. Emphasis is given for families where the parents don't live together (since children generally live with the mother) to keep the dads involved in their childrens lives. www.watchdogs.net/
I can't speak for all the schools that run the program, but we have had more fathers involved in this program than we have had mothers involved in PTO in the 5 years I have been involved combined!
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris
