I would not do it just through the board unless the $$ was very small.
The board can pass the hat and get something that way.
The best thing to do, I think, is to get something nice for the school and have members vote to donate it in the name of the retiring principal. THis is really great if it is something the principal had been hoping for or an area that s/he really cares about.
