We have never celebrated education week. Matter of fact, I've been doing this a while and didn't even know it exsisted until a couple of months ago. I think my principal wanted to do something but he didn't push the issue. Right now we have Avon sales going on. Friday is Farm Day and next month is Santa Shop. We will be purchasing gifts for the staff for the holidays and we will try to make a big deal out of Teacher Apprec Week in May.
We too celebrate Teacher Appreciation in May and provide food for the teachers. I was told this week was about educating. When I looked on their website about I saw Letters to the Editor that you could use that looked liked they would come from a teacher. I also saw ideas on the site and some were about having a rally, etc. I did see quite a few ideas on "appreciating". Since I was given a reminder from the bookkeeper about it (I was told by a past President at the beginning of the year), I think they want us to do something. I am talking to the Principal today about it. I had an idea to start a contest this week for the kids (for those who are interested) to write an essay on something...we have ideas like "What I would do if I were Principal" or "What my future carreer will be" or "What i like best about my school". We were thinking if we did this that we would start it at the end of the week and run it for another week or two and then hang the essays on the wall and have a "judging". We also are talking to ehr about giving "survival Kits" (using a poem...heres rubber band to help you hold things together, etc).
I really do not want to give more food/meals now. THis week is about educating. We give them a Monthly birthday cake to them each month. And we celebrate teacher Appreciation as well as provide food for conferences.
I am a new PTO president and i didn't know that this week was Education Week, so nothing has been done YET!! One of the schools that i work at, the PTO there gave all the teachers cell phone holders to sit on their desks. I thought that was nice. But I would rather do something that would HELP the teacher better. Maybe classroom supplies or something. NO FOOD!! We do enough food for Teacher Appreciation Day.
Mum, you aren't the only one with questions about this. I don't understand why we are supposed to provide goodies to staff to celebrate education. Shouldn't we be doing something for the school or to show what our children have learned? I have wondered numerous times why we are constantly "celebrating" something and why that instantly mean buying food for staff.
If it's any consolation, we were asked for $25 for this over a month ago and today I was asked for $50 instead because they wanted to do something better. Needless to say, with our fall fundraiser bombing big time, I don't want to spend any money at all, let alone on something like this. By the way, our staff just got lunch from us 2 weeks ago during conferences. I guess I am bothered that we are supposed to ask our poor families for more money to buy food and junk for staff.
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris
Is anyone doing anything for National Education Week this week? Our school bookkeeper sent me a reminder (I am president of PTO). Last year the past president asked people to bring in baked goodies for the teachers one day, the aides and elective staff (computers, library) one day and the cafeteria and custodians another. I thought that the purpose was about Education during this week.. Does anyone have any ideas for for this week?
