Is this a big conflict?

19 years 1 month ago #113563 by Michael B
I too have a problem anyone thinking and deciding weather anyone has time to do the jobs they have volunteered for. If they cannot hold up their responsibilities it will show down the line. We have provisions in our bylaws that allow removal by missing 2 meetings (general or executive) by vote.

(That's "moot" point.) Seems unfair that the HS is represented by more people then the other buildings if only by voice then by vote. Your concerns regarding the persons track record are legitimate, more so then the fact that she's involved in another group. My guess is that it's probably not possible to change anything at this point but perhaps it's time to re-visit the by-laws and make it clear how many people should represent each school, by vote AND by presence.

ONe of my biggest pet peeves is someone trying to decide whether or not SOMEONE else has enough time to do things. If I sign up for, I feel I am capable and willing, and that should be all that matters.

AS far as them being unreliable in the past, that is a different matter altogether. However, if it's been decided by the principal, it's probably a mute point now.

Are you asking if it is a problem to serve on the board of more than one parent group at a time? If that's the question, I think the answer is no. I hold significant positions in 4 different schools' parent groups (and I only have kids in 3 of the schools, but that's a whole other story). While I am most certainly certifiably insane, I do manage to get all the work done. It depends on the person and their circumstances.

Unfortunately, in your case, it appears that 3rd person may not pull their weight, but if you have 3 instead of the usual 2 doing the job, the other 2 can probably cover. If the principal and the other 2 people don't have a problem with this person, I'd let it go.

We are a K-12 PTO. We support 4 schools (2000 kids) and have school representatives for each building that are appointed by the principal and each person gets 1 vote.

This year our High School principal was approached by a 3 different parents expressing interest in being the PTO rep. So instead of choosing one, he wants all 3. This isn't a huge problem because we have had 2 people in the past being the rep and they would split their vote in 1/2 and would meet with the principal every other month .. now with 3 people, it will just be a 1/3 vote.

Here is my question. We just found out, by chance, that 1 of the HS reps is also the PTA president in the next town over from us.

I feel that she will not have the time to put into the HS rep position (the principal really wants us to be involved this year at his school) like the other 2 will be able. This person has also NOT been very reliable in the past (ie saying she will do something and never calls or shows up).

I don't see anything in our by-laws stating that an individual can not be on two boards in 2 different towns. I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem and if so, what did you do?

thanks so much.
