Our parade is next friday, and we decided to keep it super super...we will use our school slogan of: Everybody Learns Everyday, and the kids will dress in "hoedown" fashion to promote our fall festival, which is a "Halloween HoeDown".
I assume you've had your parade. We just had a float fiasco. It was awful. The person who came up with the idea quit before the work started. Nothing fell into place the principal wanted to cancel any representation in our parade whatsoever but I talked him into just letting the kids ride in the back of a truck to throw candy. This is going to go down on my many "things I've messed up" list.
Our theme is given to us by the Lion's Club every year (they sponsor the fair and parade). This was their 50th anniversary so the theme was "Through The Years." Keep in mind there is competition for this. The mom that quit the committee came up with the idea that we should use a school theme having a black board and an old desk and updating it as we went to the other end all the way up to a computer. Our carpet was donated. It wasn't a good one. The wagon was huge so it didn't hang over the sides. The plan was to make poster boards through different eras to use as the skirt. This was time consuming. I took year books from 1958 until now and highlighted former business sponsors of the parade and pasted these on there. Also I had schools that are no longer active on those posters. One parent was changing everything as we went along. No one would show up and help and when they did I couldn't get anything done because of one person. Plus, designing and ideas are not my thing it was poor leadership on my part. Then we get down there on parade only to find that another school had our design down to a tee except for the skirt part. I was ready to cry. I was told that school had a very different approach to their design, so imagine our surprise. I didn't care about winning but it is the thought of all that planning and work you do only to be out done with your own idea, especially when you couldn't get it to work for you. So in my notes for next year is to plan earlier, work longer, and make everyone swear to secrecy. Ha Ha. It was poor planning on my part. I had hoped someone would take it over for me. This was not even my first time on working on a float but it sure felt like it. A few years ago the same thing happened. Another school had the same exact float as us and they won! Perhaps I am anal about having one's own original ideas. Glad its over!
I like both of your ideas. I am sure it will be great. You could use the whole soar thing to go along with your mascot. The children would like to ride of the float, I am sure
We just got through our county fair and parade day!! SHEW!!! Glad it's over!! But, when I read your post I thought of the idea the other elementary in the county used this year. Your slogan could be "We Believe In Our Future". Have a wagon/trailor and fill it full of students dressed in the school colors or even dressed up as their future occupation. Dress up the float with balloons, ribbons, fringe.
Our PTA is planning on participating in our local homecoming parade in October. We are a PK-5 school. The theme is "We Believe". Our colors our red, black, and gold, and we are the Grant's Lick Cardinals.
Any ideas for the float? The only one I can think of is: We believe we can SOAR to new heights" or something along those lines....
