Houston, Dallas, San Antonio--our Katrina refugees are coming

I am also understanding some of them are going to Baton Rouge. Is this true? What about Alabama and Mississippi? I know they have suffered great devastation but because of the way things have happened in New Orleans they are getting more media coverage. Does any one have any info on these places?

God help these people.

Yes, they need school supplies--I saw that at our shelter in Louisiana today. They also need new underwear, socks, etc. Some other things we needed at our shelter today that we did not have:
fingernail clippers, toothbrush covers, towels (clean, used ones are fine), shaving lotion, and any kind of hair styling products. Just some suggestions from the front line.
Thank you

Our small town of less than 2000 is preparing to take in 300-500 evacuees. They should arrive sometime today. The school started preparing for them Friday. As our president, I am going to suggest our organization buy all the supplies these kids will need for school. The towm has already started collecting water, baby needs etc. for them. It will help the kids so much to get in school.

All the major radio stations are sending ideas from here. Lots of water (I knowone radio stationsent an entire truck trailer FULL!)

The Flood of '93 in Iowa wasn't this devistating but seeing pictures of New Orleans reminds me of downtown Des Moines...water water everywhere but not a drop to drink! Just hard to see the little ones.....

Our school sent home a letter Thursday asking for donations & by Friday afternoon we had already run out of the room where we were given to organize everything. And many kids teacher's didn't get the letter home Thursday b/c of the time the letter was ready. We have had 12 new students enrolled in our school homeless from NO. We are accepting anything and letting the families that have enrolled come in and get things they need and what ever is left the Air Force will be picking up. So in addition to the Red Cross you may want to contact your local military recruit station and they can get you the info needed. BTW, things we are also donating are first aid type items and children's medicines (tylenol, advil, benadryl)back packs, school supplies and if you are accepting clothes don't forget the socks and underware.

Hi Shelley,

We are looking to do something with our school. Would it be possible to send items to you or directly to any nearby shelter? We would use the list of items you posted. Let me know.

Lisa
