One way to encourage more parent involvement that we're working on for this year begins with recruiting (through cold phone calls using the student directory) room parents for every class. Main jobs: holiday parties and general helping out per teacher request. From this, we hope to 'grow' more parent interest in what they can do for/around the school. From there, we hope to branch out into the parent-teacher organization volunteering stuff.
I think some problems with getting parents involved is that a)they don't know what our organization does b)they don't know any other people and feel awkward c)they don't feel like they have the time and d)they haven't bought into the value of what we hope to accomplish--probably because they don't have enough info yet. My feeling is to start small--if I can convince 5 people to volunteer, and if they have a great time doing it, maybe next time they will ask one or two friends each, then pretty soon I'll have lots more people helping.
