You know, I think you should focus on that side! Even though it really was bad timing, it's definitely a positive that the powers that be obviously value your input and influence with the parents.

Can you guys hold that meeting, to encourage parents to run for the board, and then announce a special meeting for nominations for a week or two?

Hey guys! I'm sorry this is so confusing. It's hard to expain it on paper but if you saw what I'm seeing...who am I kidding, I'm still just trying to keep afloat!

Curlykids... We get outta school at the end of May. Not much time AT ALL! I just got a call from our VP and our next meeting, which is normally and per our by-laws, nominations, will be used to talk to the parents running for the School Board positions! UGH!

I don't really have this desparate need to leave (althought I am at term limit for my office) I just don't want someone to come back on us or forget that we still need to function. Also I suppose, I not too sure who wants to stay ect. SO MUCH has been thrown at us at once....All our energy has been turned to something that is important but out of our immediate control. Then there is the other side of me that is excited the PTO has finally been asked to help and our thoughts on this important change!

OOHH sorry, I need to get back to cleaning and I should add, it's amazing what a week away in the mountains will do!! :D

I think I understand so let me offer this:

If the PTO president is the only one from your PTO board running for the BOD and is NOT ALSO running for a position on the PTO, I'd have the elections at the same time.I can't see there being any confusion.

If you have more than one PTO board member running for a BOD position only, I'd hold off as it could potentially be confusing.

If a PTO board member is running for a BOD and a PTO position - personally I'd tell them to choose one over the other if you can afford to (meaning you have enough people to fill positions on both the BOD board and PTO board). It just seems to me like a recipe for trouble to have them running both things--better to keep it separate.

Hope that helps, and that I did understand the situation!

Well, I don't have a wealth of PTO knowledge, but I'll share my general feelings on what you described. I would not want to wait until fall to hold elections, but I would also be very reluctant to hold an election for the PTO board while president of said board was running for the school board. It would be confusing enough to have two elections going on at the same time, but when such a critical person is involved (either as a prez nominee or a soon to be past prez) in two elections, there is just too much opportunity for confusion. I'd probably be most comfortable with holding the election in May, but I don't know how much time that will give you. Our kids don't get out of school until the first Friday in June, so we could do nominations early may and still vote before school got out... barely, but we could do it.

Sorry about the confusion...
The District is resturcturing the SCHOOL Board and asking the PTO for our help. In our state, many charter schools are parent school boards versus a typical school officals etc. The District and our school hold a contract or (if you will) a charter that allow parents/educators to open a school and offer a cirriculum that other schools in the district don't offer. The District and the CHarter school almost have a "contractor with a sub-contractor" partnership.

We have our own money and actualy just pulled our funds out of a "District held" account. Not quite ready to become independant but maybe in a year or two.

My question was, The District has instructed the SCHOOL to elect four new members to THEIR BOARD. The PTO Board is acting as the election committee for this election. The PTO's election for new board is suppose to happen at the same time. Would you post pone? As confusing as this is for you to read....come to my school! ;)

I have a feeling we (the PTO) will still have a PTO election despite the possiblity of confusion! :(

How this affects the PTO is we have been informed that one of the measures is the School needs to restructure our current Board of Directors ie three of the current members whom are also employees need to resign and repalced with parents. Yes, parents.

Do you mean that the school's board of directors needs to be restructured and the current members would be stepping down from the school board? Just trying to clarify... I was getting confused with which board is doing what?
