It's so easy to get your own EIN number it's kind of scary--you can do it online with the IRS! If you want the school's EIN I'm presuming your PTO is under their control. They have an EIN--for someone to tell you they don't is crazy. If you're just loosely banded together and want to formalize things poke around on these boards--there's lots of help out there.
With my group we got the EIN, incorporated (it turned out we should have set up our group's name first, then got the EIN, but in the end it was OK), registered as a charitable organization with the state of NJ then got our tax-exempt status set up before we officially started our work. If you're already up and running you may already have a lot of this in place. I'd check with whomever handled the money beofre this point.
I have been trying to get our schools Tax ID Number so we can get an account set up at the bank. So far I have been told that we do not have one and as always get the run around. So how do I get one? We really need to have a Bank account because we have alot of people sending checks to our school to pay for fundraising and other things going on. Our center has been changed from a school to a head start center. If you have anything that can help me with this situation I would be very thankful to you or anyone.
Thank you,
