We host a back to school bbq and hoedown. Every year is a little different, we have had a local (I live in the sticks) group of, shall we say older folks, who played washboards and other home made instruments. They taught everyone who wanted to how to dance. We have hired a DJ to play music and we have just brought our own country music CD's for background mucis.
We get the local feed store to lend us hay bails, docorate with red and white bandanas and incourage everyone to dress accordingly. We serve hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon slices, and chili. It is a great evening. Let me know if I can be of any other help with ideas.
One year we asked a some people with horses to ride to school and pass out the flyers at pick-up time. That was great. The kids are naturally drawn to the horses. It was great advertising.
I am in need of ideas on how to put on a successful hoedown event at our school. So far, we have some ideas, such as, hiring a dj to play country music, hiring a square dancing group, telling everyone to dress in jeans, flannel shirts, cowboy hats, having a bbq and asking families to bring a dish to share, decorate with hay bales, etc., but I would love to hear ideas from people that have participated in one or helped to plan one for an elementary school. Thanks for your ideas and comments! Lovin' This Forum!!
