I thank you for the PBS info I contacted them and am getting more info on running the ready to learn workshop. ANYONE else with ideas it would be great!!
We have done this a couple times--the first time was a school related function--the principal and a few teachers came to discuss DIBELS during the first half of our PTO meeting--turnout was good. The next time we had a drug awareness speaker come in(he is the man who does searches at our schools with his dogs)--he gave us alot of great info but turnout was very low--i thought it would do alot better then it did but i was wrong. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Just today I found out that a few from our local Adult and Family Ed. Center are coming to our next meeting for a parent training program. It is a PBS sponsored program called "Ready to Learn". Parents will learn about the learning triangle: read, view and do, which is how to incorporate reading and learning activities with tv programs that kids watch. The Center is also going to have pizza on hand. That should draw a few in. ha ha It will be held before our meeting. This is the first go at this, so I'm anxious to see how it goes. They are also going to come during school hours for this program. Parents can pick which time is better.
I also have talked to some parents who want to come and share a skill or talent such as culinary arts, line dancing, and creative writing with the kids and parents. This may be done through evening sessions other than pto meetings, depending on interest. I'm really excited about it.
We are thinking about adding workshops to our PTO meetings. Does anyone already do this? How does it work meeting first or wrokshop first? What kind of things do you do workshops on?? Any ideas would be welcome!!! Please help!
