Should public schools be used as polling places?

I guess I am missing the point of WHY this might keep people from voting. I could understand why it might prompt people to keep their kids home from school that day, but why would it keep people away from the precincts?

Serendipty,

I don’t feel that I missed the point. How does voting have nothing to do with politics? I, like any parent, have concerns with our children’s safety on a daily basis and raised a few of those daily concerns in my original post. I’m not excited about people walking in and out of our schools any day of the week.

Since 9/11 has been sited in earlier posts let’s remember that the terrorists breached much tighter security than any school in the nation has and this country lost more lives that day than we did on December 7th, 1941 from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Yes, you might say I have “issues”. My main issue is that we need to keep perspective. Let’s be wise and not be victims of propaganda terrorism. As your school district, and many others have done, they have elected to give the children the day off and that is great, I’m all for it! But I doubt that that policy was adopted 10 days before a presidential election.

rocket,

My response did not say that you are a liberal. It said that we are being lead by our liberal media. I don’t think that anyone would argue that our media has a liberal slant and it is very likely that the terrorists have a good handle on how to use it to their favor.

Your concern for the safety of our children is justified. Let’s keep things in perspective and think about the three concerns in my first response and I’m sure that you can think of others like where are our kids after school gets out and their parents get off work. We must look beyond preserving people's right to vote. We must make sure that people get out to exercise that right and accessibility is one of the factors that must remain, among many others. So we need to address the issue of using schools as a polling place two weeks after the election instead of ten days before an election takes place. We know that we can’t change it on that short of notice and the media knows that. So, would you agree that we are the being exposed to media propaganda? Scaring people through their children is a form of terrorism and a plot to keep people from voting.

I’m sorry if you understood my previous post as calling you a liberal or accusing you of liberalism. I understood your question as being a concerned parent that wanted some opinions. My intent was to share a view based on our strong heritage that seems to be eroding away.

Wow Marc...I guess you have some issues. I think you are missing the point of her question which has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with the safety fo the children.

School doors are kept locked to stop people from just walking into the school whenever they want and doing whatever they want so, why on election day should the doors suddenly be open for anyone and everyone to come walking in? The policy of doors being locked is in place for a reason.

As stated above our school children have this day off of school. It has been this way in our district for 20 years or more. Long before 9/11 and long before this election. It was put in place as a protection for the children and not as a political statement.

Marc,

First, let me say that I am not a liberal, I am very conservative and our school district is a high income school district. Average income is more than $90,000 per household. The issue we are making concerns, the safety of children. Are we putting children at risk? This day and age is a lot different from my times in school. There are many other locations for people to vote at, that will not put CHILDREN at risk. Many schools are closed on election days; our school district is not. We are a great nation, and must preserve people's right to vote. Why can't we move polling stations out of public schools to protect our children without being accused of liberalism? We are not liberals, just caring and concerned parents.

We have countless school busses without seat belts. How many cafeterias preparing meals in unsanitary conditions? Drivers under the influence and/or on cell phones speeding through school zones. Just to name a few everyday concerns and we are going to let our liberal media convince us that we should move our polling places out of the public schools. I would venture to say that after that happens then they will convince us that where ever or when ever it is moved to will also be too dangerous to risk going out to vote. Then, guess what? Terrorism wins and the great nation that we are will fall because the voice of the government (the people) has been silenced. Come on people look back at the risks our founders undertook for our future. Are we going to allow our future generations to suffer because we have lost sight of the long term due to a short term, self-centered attitude? Thank God our founders had Faith and a long-term vision. Lets make them proud like the previous generations have done.
