Overcoming PTO/HSA Cliques- How to handle

Helen, welcome!!

Just curious as to how many "elementary schools" and middle schools are in your district? Do they all have their own HSA or are you combined? We have two schools (and a two catholic schools, but they are not considered our public schools). We are a very small district in NJ. NJ is notorius for a gazillion school districts - could be a topic all its own truth be told. We have one HSA for both our schools k-3 and 4-8. Most parents have children in both schools and we hold our meetings at the middle school because the building is almost open 24-7 (not!). By doing that and probably since we are a small comunity, both schools are almost one and the same to us and we never have any problems.

So I was just curious what your district is like

My daughter is in intermediate school now (5th-6th) and I attended the kick off meeting last night. I have been doing Home and School work, either as a board member or volunteer for 4 years now and I have never met a more cliquey bunch of women. Every question that I asked (and I asked quite a few) was met with hostility and dismissal. I don't know if I should dig my heels in or just bail.
The school was once an elementary school where my daughter went for 3 years, then we were redistricted and she she is back 2 years later. I love the school, principal and administration and used to love the families I met there. I keep coming to the quote "you can't go home again.", so though the building is familiar, the culture is not.
I am still very active in my son's elementary school HSA but really want to get to know this new school environment.
So, good people, give me some pointers.
