I almost got in trouble last week when I gave the new PTO president these suggestions last week because she got nervous when she spoke...
but she did call and ask.
1) You are the gel that connects families and the school. You need to keep that in mind when speaking to them. Be the bridge. Offer your help to both parents and teachers in accomplishing their goals for the year.
2) Share your goals with enthusiasm!
3) Offer an open door for suggestions about how to make the school better. Make your board's phone numbers readily available to them if they have questions or want to become involved.
4) Read a short poem or something that encourages them to become involved. Check out Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul or read the poem pals posted on the Free For All
It Only Takes a Few
5) Make yourself and your board available after the meeting if they have questions.
Good Luck. Remember, when you speak from the heart and look for a friendly face, you'll be more comfortable in public situations!
