At our school we have teachers as our by-law rep, cultural arts rep, and our school spirit rep.
Cultural arts rep brings in 8-10 assemblies per year. School spirit rep brings in a science program for all classes and any other program she feels like bringing in.
We also have 3 teacher reps. that represent all of the teachers. Our teahcers also get involved and participate in our fundraisers throughout the year. We are very lucky because our teachers really get involved in all aspects of our school.
Our board includes two teacher reps plus the Principal and Vice Principal. The teacher reps serve as a primary conduit of information. The let the other teachers know what went on at the meeting, keep us informed of key activities and needs, etc.
We have a great relationship with our teachers, but we don't expect them to come to meetings or take on a lot of tasks. They make sure our flyers go home in back packs, remind the kids about activities, are very greatful for everything we do.
For our big spring event, it is expected (by the Principal and by us) that every teacher will sign up on the volunteer sheet. Since we aren't hitting them up (timewise) for anything else, we find them pretty eager to help out for this one thing.
We have 3 Teacher Reps on our Executive Board of our PTO. They have (at least for the two years I've been involved) only done a couple things
- Said that's for the appreciation when we do something for the staff
- Organize the Volunteer Appreciation party at the end of the year
I would like to see them more involved. What challenges do they have that the PTO could help with? Are there problems with communicating to the parents? I am sure we can help as a group but them, and the principle do see the need.
What are other teachers doing, requesting, etc at your schools? I'd like to see them more involved, just like we are trying to get more dads and other parents involved.
