on the other side of the coin, i live in florida and august is hot!hot!hot!!!!! we do not go outside if the temp is above 95 degrees. the heat index is higher than that. we put the kids in the lunchroom with a movie after they have exercise for a few minutes in the gym. no way would i let my child freeze to death like that. i would go so far as to check them out of school and check them back in after recess.

I wanted to say thanks for all your replies. I have sent the Principle this link and as far as I know, she has never read this. Hope she does so she can see this is not just my opinion or to see how other schools handle the cold. Get a better idea maybe.
I think another reason why not many speak up at this school is that most of the kids are Military and move every three years. So those parents figure they only have to deal with this for a few years and it will be someone elses problem. My family has 5 more years for this to be our problem. My son will be in first grade this fall and he loves recess. Now they are going to be taking away one recess time a day, so the kids 2nd grade and lower will only have 2 breaks. I will start another thread on that one though. Geesh! Glad tomorrow is the last day this year!!

I live in Ohio, and I can not believe that parents are not OUTRAGED that their children are out in these FREEZING temps. I know the parents here would be up in arms about that!!

I find all of these rules and regulations amazing. I am not sure if there is a written policy for our school, district or state, but the operating standard allows the teacher to decide what is or is not acceptable for outside play. We live in a warm climate that can become very uncomfortable in the summer (school begins in early August). But along with that, many of our children are not equipped with winter coats, hats or gloves. It seems as if many of these states need to allow common sense back into classroom policy.

I have been reading this board for four years and this is the first topic that has completely floored me! We live in St. Louis and our policy is the children do not go outside for recess if the temp is below 32 or the wind chill lowers the temp to below 32 degrees. (We are a private school)

The summer temps must not exceed a temp of 100 with or without the heat index.

I am very proud of you for taking a stand and fighting for the best interest of the children. I agree with one of the other posts, I would go directly to the local pediatricians and ask their opinion. The pediatricians are going to give you medical advice and suggestions that are not biased, so that will give you a stronger position that just "opinions"

Good Luck and Dont Give Up!
