Volunter Center?

What I like at our school is that I can walk in and volunteer. Mainly I help in the kindergarten or make copies, but it's nice to be able to do that. I wish there were a list at the front desk of other things I could do that would really help out if I found extra time.
I have found that as I do more, the more I want to do. If there is a variety of opportunities, you'll have more and more volunteers. I think you can really create an atmosphere where everyone feels like they are useful to the school and will want to come help.
Good luck, let us know what you decide to do and what happens with it.

Would you get your own room? That would be so great. The other replies are great. Here's what I did but it never caught on with the teachers, the volunteers loved it. I had a "task board" in the workroom. I had a chart fixed on it that said: date, task, teacher, volunteer. The teacher could write the date and task so the vol. would know where to go, I asked the vol. to sign it so there wouldn't be all kinds of people disturbing their class. I also had the volunteers to fill out "bio cards" that way if a teacher did not see me or my vp she could look in the "bio binder" to see who would be available for the project she needed. I was going to fix a weekly task sheet by the teacher sign in sheet each morning but all but 1 said no. I am told teachers used to have their own baskets they would leave stuff in for copying, cut outs, etc, and a volunteer could just come in and get it done and put it back in the basket.

Find out what kind of volunteers the teacher's want and go from there. You could form little committees from those task. For example if some teachers would like volunteers to come in for a children to have some extra reading time then you could group those parents together and they could get assigned days. I could go on all day, hope I've helped.

I am the volunteer coordinator at a small, private, non-secular school. We use a bulletin board to ask our families for help with various activities such as handyperson jobs, classroom supply prep, distributing cookie dough, etc. It has been working well. Many parents want to help but didn't know what needed to be done. This system tells everyone what we needs to be done. In addition, some of the work can be done at home. There is a form available for teachers and committee chairs to use in order to post a request.

I have seen community and college volunteer centers that have a bulletin board with volunteer "jobs" available. The listings are very specific stating place, date, time, skills needed, if it is ongoing single or short term event as well as a clear description of what is needed. It takes a lot of organization but it's very useful.
