This should be an interesting topic. I just want to share my personal experience last year.
As the only jewish family in at least 30 miles I was asked if I would be interested in doing a hanukkah program for my 2 sons classes. I was thrilled to do so as we live in a very catholic, very small community.
I had a celebration with traditional food items for hannukah and 5 tables set up with different crafts. We played the dreidel game w/ m&ms, we had coloring sheets with Star of David's and menorrah's on them, we painted Jewish star's made out of tongue depressors with blue paint, and we made sugar cookies with blue and silver stars. I had the last station where I read a childrens book about the holiday to the children.
It was a fun afternoon and I even received a few calls from curious parents about what we did and they are interested in coming this year.
I was originally very nervous about how people would respond but you dont know until you try...
this is not a religious school but we do have a parochial school next door. No negative comments were made at all and we hope to have a few more less than common,(for our area), holidays celebrated this year.
I hope this helps in some way!!!
We have a large school (900 plus in K-6) with a pretty
diverse population. Lately we have had a large increase in one particular ethnic group and we are trying to figure out ways to increase their involvement in the school. Most of these parents do not volunteer in the classroom or with the fundraisers and they don't give much money either. I don't think it's an economic thing - I think it's just a cultural difference. Has anyone had luck targeting a group and getting them involved? Thanks for any input -
