This isn't what you saw, but we had a meeting to discuss starting a PTO/PTA at a new school a couple of nights ago, and we specifically asked this question. What have been the barriers to your being involved in the PTA of your previous school? Here are the answers we got:
-Lack of childcare
-Lack of transportation
-Unable to meet on the night the PTA meets
-New families don’t know how to help
-Cultural or language issues
-Perception that meetings are only for “inner circleâ€
-Meetings aren’t meant for general membership
20/80 rule—20% of the people do 80% of the work
-Need active recruitment (i.e. wasn’t asked to help)
-Lack of understanding of what help is needed
-General aversion to meetings
-Lack of communication as to what needed and when
-Don’t feel welcome
I remember reading last year the reasons for not getting involved in your school's organization and was wondering if anybody had kept a copy and could send it my way.
Thanks
