Here's the news we've been told.

Schools across the district are participating in daily activities, such as: "Lights Out On Drugs" in which students wear pajamas and bring a teddy bear; wearing sunglasses on "Too Cool To Do Drugs" day; wearing crazy socks on "Sock Out Drugs" day, and "Proud to Be Drug Free," in which students wear their school colors. some have also added days like "Yes to Sports..... No to Drugs!" Everyone will wear their favorite sport's jersey/ shirt. and the finalee day for
"Red Rally Day". Everyone will wear red that day.

Since this is coming up soon, I thought I would revive this topic. We do the red ribbons for the week. Also for the week we do a school spirit sort of week. The kids get to do a different thing for each day. THings like mis-matched sock day, hat day, green and white day (our school colors) and I can't remember the others. But they wear they ribbons for the whole week. I would love to hear what other communities do for drug free week.

One thing we do for Red Ribbon Week is publish what we call a Parent Network Directory. We have a "letter and form" that gets sent out along with membership stuff in our summer mailing, and are available at our Parent Night (usually the second week of school) and gets put in our take-home a couple of times.

By signing the agreement, and being included in the directory, you're communicating to other parents that you offer a drug and alcohol free environment, that you'll be home during they're parties, etc....

Oh, we also do this in conjunction with the other middle school in the district... so there's one Parent Network Directory for the whole district. This is especially helpful as the kids get older and start socializing with kids from the other school.

for the kids... a lot of it is age dependent. poetry or poster contests... tie red ribbons on all the trees... they wear "drug free" ribbons or buttons.... your health teacher probably has some suggestions.

your police department's community relations officer is a good source or info too. you might get him/her to some and speak to the classes....
