Thanks for the feedback Renee, we're in Rhode Island. I'm just concerned if we start a petition, I wouldn't want to start off on the wrong foot w/the new princial.
Thanks again,
Cheryl

If that was our school, I would start a petition to have the reading period banned.

These children need that 15 minutes to get their energies out so that they can concentrate on their studies.

What are they thinking? Yes children need to be read too, but you are talking about a "teacher aide" not a teacher doing this. The teachers would still get their 15 minutes to do what they want. Is this fair? I don't think so.

IMHO as a parent in your school, I would start a petition immediately to have this banned.

Between school work and homework, these children need the time to play too.

just my two cents worth,

Renee

PS. Just curious what state do you live in?

Hi everyone,
We were notified at the beginning of this school year that one of the recesses was being eliminated for grades 2-5. This policy is townwide (there are 5 elementary schools in our town). A reading activity conducted by a teacher aid will replace the recess. The children currently have about a 1/2 hour lunch, plus the one remaining recess. 5 of 8 of the exec. board are are very upset about this and would like to survey the rest of the parents to see their feelings. Our new principal just started this year. As Co-Pres. I feel the pressure of the exec board, but I'm not so sure it's a bad thing. The new principal does not seem crazy about the survey. I think we should wait until the new principal has her bearings. My recommendation is to check w/the other schools to see their feelings, do some research online to see what effects positive and negative the recesses could have, and check w/other local communities to see what their recess policy is and see if there is any correlation to test scores. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Cheryl
