We just started our PARP (Parents As Reading Partners) READING AROUND THE BARNYARD theme on Friday.
The local Zoo brought on animals for the students to see for our kick-off assembly. Each classroom has decorated their door to represent an animal on the farm. Examples: pig out on books (pigs), quack open a good book (ducks) etc. Even the gym door is decorated with frogs: Jump Into Reading! We are having a door judging contest. Our PARP activity calendar has special events such as: Read A Shirt Day, Read A Hat Day, Guest Readers and Silly Sock Day. Students read every night at home and return their completed reading logs for prizes. The principal has to wear a silly chicken hat if we reach our reading goal! On the daily announcments we have our farm animal trivia such as: How many eyelids does a duck have? Students submit their answers and winners are announced daily for prizes, There is a fact finding wall displayed near the computer lab where all the anwers to the trivia question can be found. SOOOOO much fun! Oriental Trading Company has many themes and materials needed. This is where I came up with the farm theme.
Our school always goes all out every March. Every reading month is based on a theme. We have a school wide reading contest class v. class to see who can read the most and turn in the most reading review sheets during the month, the winning class gets to go on an all expenses paid field trip. The field trip always fits the theme...for example.... "Have a Ball with Reading" we took the winners bowling....or "Catch a Good Book" we took them to a Detroit Tigers baseball game. We also do a dress up week, mystery reader week, drop everything and read week, and a guest reader week.
That is really interesting however it is really hard to thing something about it,Well maybe if those parents love reading well you should guess a book which is a good game for me.
