I am in a K-12 school and last year we hosted the Alive@25 program for our high school students the week of Prom. We also helped the Junior class with the purchase flowers for Prom Royalty. We also offer a scholarship (help) for students that go on huge feild trip that is $95 per student. My group is VERY small but we have found ways to make a difference in little ways.
Thanks plw... we currently have a great administration at the school that is very supportive of our association's efforts. Our school store produces over $10,000 a year, negating the need for "traditional fundraising". We are very involved in presenting topical issues such as curriculm and extra curricular activities as well as topics on your latter comments; but we just can't seem to get parents to our meetings.. we recently had a freshman orientation week with a BBQ that attracted over 100 parents.. over 25% signed up and paid dues; only time will tell if they support the meetings. Thanks again for your response.

What things do you do at the high school now? Our high school PTA does a Painless Project fundraiser. Families are invited to make a monetary donation instead of participating in a fund raiser. They suggest $10.00. There is a Teacher Appreciation Tea and a few other things. We have about 4,000. students. We have an Athletic Booster group that supports all the sports programs and a Music Booster group that takes care of all of the music opportunities in our school district. I have heard of Academic Boosters but do not know any more about it.
A few things I can suggest is to get together with the principal. At this level it important to have the school help you in figuring out where parent involvement is needed and even create ways for our parents to become involved. At our high, they have a job mentoring program where students are hooked up with people who are in the field of work the student is looking into. This is a great place for parents. We are also able to tutor students. There are just so many parent and student organizations going and taking care of their own needs that the PTA spends most of its energy on parent education. Offering talks on all the high school issues. College, drugs, teen parties, self esteem, study skills-using resources etc...
Hi. I'm looking for any information from parents involved in a high school association. I'm a first year president of a large urban high school of approximately 1200 students.. we only average 25-30 parents a meeting.. looking for some ideas on how to get high school parents involved.
