I agree with Critter--seems like a much better way of handling it. But one correction to DaveP's response if you do end up having to pay them--the 1099 filing is an annual thing, not quarterly. 1099s need to be issued by January 31 each year to the individual.
Thanks, for the input. I am a non-profit accountant and have experience with IRS reporting. However, there is no guarantee that the next treasurer will have similar experience. I will put forth the "donate to the school" argument.
I would agree with you 100%. Unless you have experience doing this and the rules that apply, any work that needs to be contracted out needs to be handled through the school district. It may cost more because they are going to have a set of rules governing how to hire this work out, but unless you have an accountant in your pocket and hopefully they are the Treasurer you can get into trouble with this real fast.
If we were pursuing a similar sponsorship, I think we would donate the money to the school, and let the school hire the contractor. The school district has the professionals who really understand human resources and payroll issues. I wouldn't want to take on that role as a volunteer.
The simple answer is yes! If you contract them as independant contractors, to do a specific task and you are paying them then you will need to complete a 1099 and file this with the IRS quarterly.
