When I entered PTO three years ago the previous treasurer brought the ledger to the organizational meeting, but did not leave it. We were unaware of our funds and what had been done with the money raised from the year before. I talked to our principal about it and she had called the lady several times, but we never did get the ledger. She did not try has hard as she could have to get the ledger. This principal is now gone and it makes you wonder if she did not also have something to cover up. Fortunately for us the account WAS in a bank. I had to go through the bank and find out the amount of money the PTO had. We started out with $111.18 and have built from that every year. Believe me, you can and will get past this and it won't be easy but keep working hard and keep the faith and it will all work out. Good luck!

You may want to review your bylaws and maybe rewrite them so no one can have this kind of power. I suggest term limits, external audits,and a spreading out of monetary power. Our president does not have the power to write or sign checks. Also our bylaws state that the Board is to be presented with a treasurers report EVERY month. These are a few suggestions for when you get up and running. It is too bad that a few will spoil it for all.
I would really like to know how this turned out.. It sounds horrible.. You can only imagine what those women or hiding after 6 years.. with PTO in their personal account..
Ditto.... WOW... Get principal involved. If that doesn't or didn't work, go to the Board of Ed. Speak to the superindendant. See if he/she can get a town attorney to draft a letter for the immediate return of the books. You can not start the year by getting the books on the first day of school. Then start from scratch, only you and your new board can loose the negative undertone created. And you will, don't get discouraged. Good luck.
