Help! The executive board this year wants to change the By-Laws. Actually just the current President. She has rewritten them all by herself. She has not gone through the proper procedure to notify parents and she is using derogatory wording in the By-Laws. Give me advice because there are sooooo many problems I have with this. Where do I start? Where can I go for legal support to my concerns?
if you are willing to pass along suggestions to the chain of command (i assume you mean school admin) then the inference i make is you would be trying to make a change....otherwise, why make a suggestion?
Our PTO is trying to update and improve our bylaws also. Some of the bylaw committee group got together and added this line to our bylaws: "The XXXPTO will seek neither to direct the administrative activities of the school nor to control its policies, but will be open to suggestions to put forth in an appropriate manner to the proper chain of command." Does this seem out of line to anyone? We have had some opposition to this statement. I would just like an outside view?
My last school had only 20 voting members: the executive board, teacher reps and committee chairs. The Review Committee presented their recommendations for review to the voting members via email one week prior to the meeting. At the meeting we discussed each suggestion individually and tweaked as we saw necessary. Then we'd have one general motion, 2nd and vote to accept the entire document. Once accepted, the new bylaws were immediately in place.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same."

A committee drew up the proposed changes and presented it to the Exec Board. We agreed to the wording, and all changes were presented at the next PTO meeting. We listed the original wording (if there) and the new wording. If it was all new, it was duely noted. Each item was put to a vote, the votes counted & recorded in the minutes and the bylaws updated as of our June 06 meeting. You need to tell your membership you are proposing the changes and voting on them so they are aware & have the opportunity to be there to vote. Also, Voting rules apply
