Where is your checkbook

Thats a third here. The treasurer has the checkbook. To me that is a no brainer. And like the previous poster said (sorry my short term memory is about 2 seconds tonight  ) two signatures on a check. Checks and balances always! (Especially with all that theft out there in PTO/s or whatever acronym is being used. I keep reading more and more theft stories... and it seems to be escalating which is really alarming to me! )

I'll second MichelleB - the treasurer keeps the checkbook. If your president wants to make purchases that weren't properly approved, or refuses to sign for purchases that were approved, she's a poor leader. I doubt your bylaws give the president veto power. Be sure every check has two signatures, is properly approved, and properly documented, and you have nothing to worry about (except her wrath).

Thank you for your input. We do not have the principal on our checkbook as per district request, it is myself, the president, and the secretary. I fell like I am responsible for anything that happens to it and our bylaws state that all checks must have my signature and one other. I think she is just being petty but I wish she would quit sending me these emails telling me that she is pres and is calling the shots. Our district does not like us to use employees to solve PTO issues because we are a seperate intity and are not to use their resources so I feel like I can't ask anyone from the school to interceed outside of the actual meeting. I think she has me going in circles and I'm nuts over it so thanks again for all your input.

The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating-in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life. --Anne Morris

Our treasurer has ours also. The last thing I need added to my responsibilities is taking care of the check book. That is why I will never be treasurer.

From what I have read so far, just tell her no. In our PTA bylaws, the first duty of the treasurer is "have custody of all the funds of the association" So wherever the treasurer is, is where the checkbook is kept.
You can tell her that as treasurer, you are fiscally responsible to your membership and that the checkbook is your responsibility and that you are the person that would be held accountable for the books, should anything be amiss. For your own protection, you will not hand over the checkbook. however, if she would like to petition the membership to allow it (which from what I have read, that wouldn't happen, would it?) then she can bring it to a vote and have a record (the minutes) of who has custody of the checkbook.

I am the President of our PTO and I am not even on the checking account to sign checks. Our Treasurer and Principal sign the PTO checks. The checkbook is kept with the Treasurer. Believe me I like it that way as President I have enough to do that I don't want the responsibility of the checkbook too.
