Dr Seuss' birthday is March 2nd. One thing we did last year that was alot of fun was Hop on Pop. We bought rolls of bubble wrap and gave some to all the Pre-k, kindergarten and first grades. Their teachers read them the story and the children hopped and popped. They loved it!
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! This is one of my most favorite events. We broke the children down into round robin style readings. In each classroom the teachers of course were reading Dr. Seuss books. While the children were listening to the readings parents were gathered in the cafeteria, and were learning more about the Title I reading program and the other reading programs in our school.
We also had parents donate decorated cakes and we had them auctioned off. We raised nearly $1500 which went into a fund to purchase new books for our school. We also rented costumes (The Cat in the Hat, Thing I and Thing II, and Mr.Grinch.) The kids had the opportunity to have their pictures taken with the characters as well. When the readings and the auction was over everyone met up for cupcakes and punch! The evening was a huge success and everyone had a great time.
During the week leading up to the birthday party, we sponsored many different activities. One day we had the kids and teachers come to school dressed as their favorite story book characters, we had a student/teacher dress reversal day where the kids dressed as teachers and the teachers could dress as kids. It was great! My favorite was the little girl who dressed up as our principal.
During that week we had also distributed books to local dr.'s office waiting rooms, and other waiting rooms in our town. We enclosed a sticker in each book stressing the importance of and encouraging parents to read to their children.
This is a great event that you can have alot of fun with. I think if I search my PTO disks I still have all of my information saved. You can email me if you would like me to send you more detailed information.
In our school, each grade level choose a different Dr. Suess story and decorated their hallway. Kindergated did one fish, two fish, red fish blue fish, another grade did The places we will go, etc. On Dr. Suess's birthday the children paraded around the school to see if the could guess the story.
Last year on Dr Seuss' birthday we held our Book Fair. We rented a Cat in the Hat costume and our principal and a father took turns wearing it for a couple of hours in the morning. Our superintendent and a couple of board members came in and read to different classrooms throughout the morning too. Then during the day we had dear drills (drop everything and read), whenever the principal rang a bell, the kids would have to stop whatever they were doing and read until she rang the bell again (2 minutes later). Our kindergarten class had green eggs and ham. Everyone had a great time.
