Our group also looked into scratch cards and unanimously voted it down. We also felt that it was too close to gambling and the lottery scratch offs. Plus, you had to pay for them up front, so there was risk involved. No way!!! Any fundraiser that we do must have something of quality that our supporters will get in return!
We discussed this for about 10 this summer. You have to pay for the cards upfront and then try to get people to scratch off different circles. Then you have to get them to pay up. We said "No Way!" We don't want to have to pay upfront for something and get left hanging.
We looked into this as an option last year, and one of our aides said that her daughter's cheer team had sold them. She said that most of the girls were embarrassed to ask people to do it. It seems a little like begging to me, and I am glad that our parents voted against it.
We never used them but the boy scouts in our town did a few years ago and it was a disaster. They ended up loosing like $1000 on this. I do not know which company they used, but ultimately I do not think that mattered. The bottom line was they could not sell them all and they could not get people to pay up the amount they scratched off.
