Could you please let me know who to contact at UCONN for a book fair? (They're only 30 minutes from here) Like you, we are more concerned with getting kids to read than making money. You might want to look into any small local bookstores -- you would be surprised at the services they provide. We used the co-op bookstore from the University of CT for our last book fair. The profit margin was a little less than with Scholastic, but we decided to use them anyway for the following reasons: 1) Our kids already purchase through Scholastic flyers and 2) Our book fair is not really a fundraiser, but intended more to promote reading.
You might want to see if you have a DK (Dorling Kindersley) rep. in your area. These books are great. We had a rep at our school two years ago and they did "book fairs". The only drawback is they are more expensive that most scholastic books and parents might not be willing to pay more. Maybe even having both at a book fair would be wise so that parents who only purchase books to make the kid happy for a moment and parents who want educational material would both be satisfied.
We just finished our Scholastic book fair and I was wondering if there are alternatives to Scholastic and Troll. I'm not too happy with Scholastic (too much overpriced junk and too many movie/tv tie-in books) but Troll seems to have pricier books. I'm wondering if there are any other companies that do book fairs.
