A few years back National PTA voted to push legislation to ban the sale of fireworks. It was one of their legislative positions, I guess. I don't know what they hoped to accomplish with a position like that. Maybe cut down on injuries? Can't believe it passed. Seems a little anti-American for my taste.
I'm with you Jeniene. Fireworks are illegal here (southern Nevada)except for June 27-July 4 when they lift the ordinance. You do have to submit for a permit to the City and get approval. Here they are everywhere. We too are talking about the "safe & sane" fireworks. You can buy them at a lot of stores as well. The City mandates that to purchase the fireworks you have to be at least 16. After that, you can't be responsible for stupid or negligent parents. If our City doesn't seem to be worried about liability issues and I'm sure they check it through the legal dept., I don't think it's a huge issue. I can't tell you how many churches, schools, HS teams, pretty much any tax exempt entity can apply.
I think our PTA should try it one year and see how profitable it is vs the work.
Hi everyone,
Fireworks are legal here (Central Coast of California). Our local fire department even had a stand this year. I'm talking "safe and sane" here, not bottle rockets. One of our soccer clubs has a booth every year and they make about $13,000 for only 4 days work. It's just an idea my co-president and I were thinking about, haven't brought it up to anyone officially yet.
can you imagine the liability issues if someone was to get injured using fireworks they purchased from your school?
How is this any different from puchasing fireworks at a store? Not that I would want to do this kind of fundraiser, but I don't understand how the liability issue would come into play.
Not only are fireworks illegal in most states, but can you imagine the liability issues if someone was to get injured using fireworks they purchased from your school?
I heard on the NPR radio last week, that stands that sell fireworks for 10 days leading up to July 4th make around $10,00.
Seems like easy money,but...............
There is something about selling fireworks that really frightens me and just seems wrong. You can say that people need to be 18 or so to purchase, but I see alot of parents letting their kids use firworks, sometimes with supervision and some times not. At our annual 4th party in our neighbor, parents supervising are not exactly in the best position to supervise after "drinking" all day. I would not be in favor of our school doing this fundraiser. -Diane
