At our elementary school we published individual books for each child. The way it worked was the kids would submit their story, parents would type them up and then kids would add their illustrations. Kids in grades K - 3 got spiral bound books and the older kids got bound books. I think we sent out for them The Spiral binding machine is a special machine and I don't think it's cheap but once you buy it, it lasts forever. No reason to outsource this and pay someone to do it. For our school, it wasn't a fundraiser, it was just something we did. With most people using word processing these days, the only technical thing to do is the spiral binding.
The name of the company is what I can't remember, but they were charging (I think) about $15 per book (that's the price the kids sell them for), and the profit I'm not sure about either. I know that we'd have a hard time selling the books at $15 each, even though they're created by our kids. The really nice thing that I liked was they had a contest for the cover art. So everybody that wanted to participate, could include short stories, poems and artwork for the content of the book, then they had a separate contest to determine who's artwork would be on the cover. I'd like to find a local company to do this also, so if you find out what your local company is willing to do, maybe I can use that information to find someone in the Cincinnati area....
Missy, At the Chicago Convention, how much was this book person charging per book?
What was the size of the book, how many pages(does each child get a page), does every child in the school have something in the book or do you select only a few to go in, hard cover or soft cover?
What did the cover look like, was it full color or just foil printing?
Where the inside pages in color or black & white, and was the printing on both front & back of pages?
The reason I'm asking so many questions is because I found a local book maker who is willing to try this out if I can get some more info for her to cost it all out. I think this idea is wonderful!
