Hi all, I have been reading posts for about 2 years now, but have never posted anything. I am the PTSA president at my daughter's school and I am also a 2nd grade teacher. I just returned from the Mississippi Reading Association conference and I met an Author there who does a Reading Pal fundraiser. Students will pre-oder the Pals for $15.00 and the school keeps $4.00 of each pal sold. The students will choose from an assortment of animals and they each receive a T-Shirt that they decorate with Reading Slogans, a birth certificate, a wishing star and each child gets this bookmark that has a Reading Wish on it. They have to make a committment to read to their reading pal every night. I know this is kind of long, but I had to share the wishing poem with you.
"Sometimes I wish for things that I have to have right away.
Sometimes I wish for toys, but the newness fades that day.
Today I wish for patience to help me reach my goal, and also for direction as each new day unfolds.
And last for understanding as I read each day I'll find, just like I feed myself I need to feed my mind.
The poem came from her book When I Learned to Read . The book is a great motivator for struggling readers. Read across America is coming in March and we are going to invite her out. You can either have her come out or you will get an instructors guide and run everything yourself. I've used Reading Buddies before and that worked well.
