Our school is gearing up for our 33rd annual carnival in February. I was co-chair for 3 years and have a timelime available as well as an informational summary.

We have game rooms, food room, cakewalk, bingo (that is a big money maker for us) and raffle tickets. We ask local businesses for donations for the bingo prizes - don't usually start that until January. The raffles consist of $100.00 gift certificates to local grocery stores - they usually give us discounts and cash. (We have 4 raffles). Once in a while, we have a 5th raffle - a BBQ that goes for a higher price on the raffle - this is done when we can get the donation from the company.

We have our students do a poster contest in January that are then put up around town as our advertising. The students also sell raffle tickets prior to the carnival during January - they get prizes for selling the most. We also have them vote on the theme of the carnival - vote is in October.

Planning starts in October and we take our time at it. The main push comes after break when we get back in school in January.

If you want a copy of the timeline and summary, email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

My son is in a new school, just opened, and we are forming a new PTO and trying to find fundraisers, etc. I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions. Please feel free to e-mail me directly. Thanks!

Last year while trying to get donations for our Winter Carnival in January I actually had some companies ask me to get back with them after the new year. I guess some companies only allow xx amount of dollars per year for donations and it starts over new in January. If I were you I would figure out what all you want to see about getting donated and then hit it hard after the New Year!! Good luck!! P.S. It's never to early to start planning a carnival. There always seems to be something that comes up in the end!!

Hey!
our carnival is on oct 21st and we officially started asking for donations on August 15. i know because i have a copy of the letter. but we did get a lot of people tell us they would consider it and get back to us when it was closer. but then again we had a lot go on and donate things. So i guess it just all depends.

My thoughts with yours is this--if you start 4 months early, that is December, so i would think it wouldn't be that great from local business. I wonder about January though. it probably comes down to if they had a good christmas for most businesses. That really is a tough one. i will say that i have found that i get more from local places than large corporations. it takes more leg work, but inthe end pays off. GOOD LUCK!!

keep us posted on how it goes though. We are contemplating a spring fling, but will base it on the one coming up next weekend.
