I would suggest doing things through an on-line auction to gather the bids. But offer up things from national chains like Dominos or Olive Garden or Sports Authority for just a few that came to mind. These items can be mailed in a regular postal envelope so there is limited shipping hassle.
Also, another item that I have seen work well in this situation is travel certificates. For instance a cruise to the Bahamas. Again, nothing required for shipment.
Other options that kids may like is series of MP3 downloads or Movie Passes to a national chain movie theater. Alot of these things can be donated by your local franchise or location, but are redeemable nationwide.
Just some ideas that I have seen other auctions use in the past.

Anyone have any ideas???
Sorry, one more try... You have a tough one. Perhaps you could try a spin on an internet auction. Instead of having items donated to a local area, you may be able to get services donated (such as a free car wash or free round of mini-golf). List your auction items by area. Winners could then be emailed a certificate to redeem. If you have several students gouped in an area you might try getting parents to donate services such as window washing, lawn mowing, or snow shoveling to be bid on. Good luck!
