I just called the company to find out were the fragrances came from, and I was told by Paul that they use regular fragrances. He told me they have been around for over 10 years and they have had no complaints. They have only been contacted by schools because of their PB&J flavor, due to fear of peanut allergies. They are changing it to just jelly. Yes, they are made of recycled newspaper and the plastic comes from corn, but the fragrances are normal, so contain phthalates. Please see these links form EWG and the FDA
So although they are made from environmentally friendly material, they are a health hazard for children, especially since the purpose is to smell them and the smell lasts for 2 yeas if stored in the plastic container.

We just sold smencils during lunch at our school and they sold out in 2 lunches. We are re-ordering for the rest of the school. We think it is a good profit @ selling them for a $1 ea. Some kids bought 10 at a time. We have had schools in our area sell them at their school stores and some do it 3 times a year. We will clearly make a profit and the kids will have fun.
We buy Smencils every year and sell them at our school store- the kids love them - we sell them for $1.00 each-- so year I think this would be a great carnival prize-- showcase that they smell and let the kids smell the different flavors-- the peppermint were not big sellers- grape, orange bubble gum-- think kid friendly
