We divide up the kids K-3, and then 4-6. K -3 comes out first. We have a DJ play music for the kids and then the kids, teachers and parents walk/ run for 30 minutes. For every lap they do we put a smiley face sticker on them. Kids lve to see if they can get covered in the stickers. We also have a water station available for them during the walk but encourage the kids to bring their own water bottle. At the end we hand out frozen ices.

Last year was our first year to do a walk and our kids walked in groups K-1st, 2-3 and 4-5. They all walked for 50 minutes. We had music and many parents and teachers walked with them. We had firefighters and any costumed characters we could get donated to cheer them on. We gave them water during and popsicles after. Our kids (about 550) walked a total of 1,852 miles. We had a 94% participation rate and earned double what any other fall fundraiser had. Parents loved that it was healthy, they didn't have to sell anything and all the money went to the school. We had sponsors cover our expenses like the free t-shirts everyone got. They had a great time and cannot wait to do it again this year.

We are planning our walk-a-thon for October-- it's going to be only for the kids-- but all the kids in the school participate--whether they are collecting donations/pledges or not-- we figure we'll get a better turn-out this way.
We will be having a DJ play music through out the whole day-- we'll also have a bubble blowing section- where a machine blow bubbles constantly-- we'll have a limbo section as well-- we're trying to come up with a few other fun things as well on the course--
And we're giving out water bottles to everyone at the end of the walk.
