pto presidents ethical violations

My advice to you would be to speak with the Superintendent. Give him the information you have on this person. The Super and the Principal should handle and investigate it without ever mentioning your name. Who you are should remain confidential.

It would seem that the Super and the Principal have no knowledge of this and I am sure they would like this information in order to avoid any scandal or misfortune.

I think you should step forward and discuss with another officer or the school principal. Being in a current situation where I suspect this of our President, but not being able to know exactly where to go for info is a concern for me. I wish someone would at least provide us with info that would allow us to begin a removal process.

It is a tough situation, but the PTO handles 10s of thousands of dollars and in our case the president is trying to usurp the Treasurer's power and responsibility as his own... but meeting with much resistance.

I would love to know what actions if any you decide to take or ways for someone not directly involved in a matter like this could obtain that info. Please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you would like. THanks.

Welcome to the boards-too bad you couldn't be discussing a cheerier topic!

My answer is "NO!" this person should NOT be president of the PTO! I know there are those out there who would say all that stuff has nothing to do with the PTO and the past is the past, but I beg to differ. A PTO is more than class moms and field trips, so all those "indiscretions" defintiely have a bearing on what happens to the group, the school and ultimately the kids. If anything they would seem to go against any sort of "good character" clause should your group be lucky enough to have one (in fact, that's one my bylaws will be getting now)! Just ask for the bylaws--the secretary should have them available, as should the other members. By being "involved" are you a defendent or a lawyer? Legally this could have implications.

I'm going to speak assuming that no one knows about the stuff you know: I find that people REALLY dislike scandal, whether they be directly involved or not, This could or couldn't work to your advantage--now that this person is in, people may be afraid to ask them to step down since that could lead to ugliness, but on the other hand, the school district may not take kindly to this person having this past and ask them to step down. Either way, I'd definitely meet with the principal and superintendent and let them know what you know--if they don't know they should, and if they DO know, SHAME ON THEM for letting it happen, and if they know others know about it they may take steps to protect the school. Imagine how you'd feel if you said nothing, then something happened that you could have prevented.

Good luck--keep us posted!

I just found out that the person who was voted president of my child's PTO is a person who I have actual knowledge has been involved in insurance fraud, tax fraud and violations of several state labor laws. (As I am personally involved in the case in which those things occurred I am unwilling and unable to step forward myself to expose this person) In your opinion, should this person be allowed to continue as president of our PTO? Do I need to research the by-laws of our PTO? How do I get a copy? What should I do? I don't specifically wish to do this person harm, but I'm afraid of what harm this person might do to the Parent Teacher Organization of our school. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.
