Daron, Looks like your group did it's homework and decided what is best for your group. Please know that you can always come here and ask questions, get suggestions, and help others regardless of the acronym of your group.

Just to answer your statement that there is no other not-for-profit national voice for public education in Washington - the reason that many groups choose to not pay dues to a national PTA is that they wish to leave those decisions up to their membership - whether or not they wish to contribute financially and otherwise to a PAC group that lobbies for public education. For me and for the groups I work with - we leave that choice up to each individual member. If they wish to make financial contributions to any lobbying voice - whether it's for public education, save the whales, or whatever - that is their choice. We do not force them to be a part of that by participating in their child's school.

UPDATE: After searching online, talking to the State Mississippi PTA, and even meeting one of our State PTA Board members...who came to our school for a PTA Meeting to discuss dissolving our PTA and being a PTO...

we decided to stay PTA.

The main reason is.YES, this website is great...YES the resources here are great.....BUT...

...there is no PTO that stands up for public education on a congressional level, THAT is Non-Profit. This website and everything is a FOR profit business....I'm not dogging that, but...

Without teh PTA, there is no other national voice for public schools..

so we will stay with the PTA.

Thanks for the info and feedback I have received from this post, though.

Is there anyone out there that have gone from PTA to PTO in Mississippi?

I have a copy of our School PTA Bylaws, but I'm just interested if anyone in the state has dealt with the state Mississippi PTA office in doing this...

I think we have our plan almost set to change over to a PTA, but still...just wondering.

Daron
